Why Teach Latin?

Lingua Latina gaudium et utilis est!
The Latin language is fun and useful!

All students at Mary McLeod Bethune Day Academy receive Spanish instruction as part of their core curriculum. Students in grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 also recieve Latin instruction. Foreign language is very important to our curriculum at Mary McLeod Bethune Day Academy Public Charter School. We believe that as students study a foreign language, they become experts in their native language. As they study latin specifically, they gain greater understanding of the meaning of words and are able to develop comprehension and word application skills much more strategically. These skills greatly improve students' speaking, writing, and understanding of the English language.

A growing body of research shows that studying Latin improves students' problem-solving ability, vocabulary and college entrance exam scores. A recent study of sixth-graders who studied Latin only 30 minutes a day for five months showed the students advanced nine months in their math problem-solving abilities.

At Mary McLeod Bethune Day Academy, we strongly believe that through academic rigor, character building, and cultural awareness; we can shape the leaders of tomorrow. Latin instruction is a great way to strengthen these key components of a well rounded education.

The Top 5 Reasons to Learn Latin:

  1. 60% of English words are derived from Latin.

  2. Latin trains the mind to think logically and precisely. One must analyze, observe, evaluate, judge, understand. This reasoning process is transferred to other areas, such as mathematics.

  3. Latin helps with standardized tests. For instance, between 1997 and 2004, Latin students scored an average of 157 points higher on the SAT's than non-Latin students.

  4. The study of Latin greatly assists those with careers in certain fields. Latin underlies the technical language of law, medicine, science, academia and technology. If a youth is interested in working in any of these areas, Latin is invaluable. Additionally, the business world has long recognized the importance of a rich vocabulary and rates it high as evidence of executive potential and success.

  5. Latin aids the understanding and appreciation of all aspects of Western culture. This classical language flows through history, art, philosophy and particularly literature. How exciting to understand the context of that familiar expression, "carpe diem" and to read Shakespeare and catch the nuances.
